3-way battle intensifies in Kerala elections

LDF, UDF neck-and-neck with high-stakes battles in key seats

With just days left before the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, the state is witnessing a tense political showdown. The traditional duel between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF) is now complicated by the BJP‑led NDA, turning many constituencies into three-way contests.

Recent surveys show a neck-and-neck race between LDF and UDF, with the BJP poised to win a few strategically important seats. Campaigning has grown sharper, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah targeting both fronts over alleged Waqf land encroachments, positioning the BJP as a “third alternative.” Congress leaders, in turn, allege a covert understanding between BJP and LDF, claims denied by both parties.

In traditional LDF strongholds like Kollam, veteran leaders face tough battles, boosted by recent municipal wins for the UDF. All three parties have promised pensions, jobs, health coverage, and infrastructure, but voters are watching closely who can deliver on these promises.

A report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) shows nearly 38% of candidates have declared criminal cases, with the UDF having the highest number. Polls suggest a regional pattern: UDF gains in the north, LDF holds the south, while BJP shows its strongest influence in select Christian-majority constituencies.

As polling day nears, the stakes are high where LDF seeks a third consecutive term, UDF aims for a comeback, and BJP hopes for breakthrough wins. With close margins in many seats, the final verdict could hinge on local swings and last-minute voter sentiment.
