A devastating accident near Madinah, Saudi Arabia, claimed the lives of 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims on Monday. Among the victims, 18 members from a single Hyderabad family, spanning three generations, were killed.
The crash occurred around 1:30 am when a bus carrying pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker, causing a massive fire that completely destroyed the vehicle. The impact was so severe that many bodies were “charred beyond recognition,” and authorities said DNA testing would be needed to identify the deceased.
The bus was reportedly traveling from Mecca to Madinah after the pilgrims had completed their Umrah rites. Among the victims were women and children, with reports indicating that at least 30 women and children were on board.
The Telangana government has responded swiftly, sending a relief team led by Mohammad Azharuddin to coordinate efforts in Saudi Arabia. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock and directed officials to work closely with the Ministry of External Affairs and Saudi authorities to support the victims’ families.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences, stating that Indian diplomatic missions in Riyadh and Jeddah are providing “all possible assistance.” Relatives in Hyderabad have expressed grief and are urging the government to help bring back the bodies and provide care for any injured.
