6.9 Quake Strikes Central Philippines, 69 Lives Lost

It was probably one of the darkest nights for the central Philippines on Tuesday, when a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake shook the city. The devastation was grave, killing at least 69 people and injuring more than 150 others. The quake hit just before 10 p.m. near the coast of Cebu, catching many people by jolt when they were relaxing at home.  Just a week earlier, Super Typhoon Ragasa or Nando had battered the northern Philippine islands without severe destruction, but this is very heartbreaking, claiming so many lives at one shot.

As a result of the catastrophe, many buildings collapsed, including houses, schools, and even a 100-year-old church. In Bogo City, hospitals were almost full, and doctors were forced to treat patients in hallways and even outside. Some towns, like San Remigio, have declared a state of calamity to seek more help for those distraught and stuck in the rubble.

Rescue teams are still searching through debris for survivors. Many families spent the night outside, afraid of aftershocks. Some saw the sea water briefly pull back from the shore, but no tsunami warning was issued.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has sent officials to the area to help coordinate emergency aid and promised to support the victims with the best aid.

The Philippines often experiences earthquakes because it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone known for strong earthquakes and volcanic activity. But for people in Cebu, this one was especially frightening and destructive.
