Donald Trump warns of 25% tariffs on EU cars

Proposed hike raises risk of fresh trade tensions between the US and European Union

U.S. President Donald Trump has signalled a sharp escalation in trade tensions with the European Union, warning that tariffs on European cars and trucks could be raised to 25%.

The move, which could take effect soon, comes as Trump claims that the EU has not fully met its commitments under an earlier trade understanding. According to him, the bloc has not done enough to ease trade barriers or align with U.S. expectations, prompting Washington to consider stricter measures.

The European Union, however, sees the situation differently. Officials there have indicated that implementation of trade commitments is still underway and have cautioned that such a tariff hike could lead to retaliation. If that happens, it may trigger another round of back-and-forth measures between the two sides.

For the global auto industry, this has raised fresh concerns. European carmakers rely heavily on the U.S. market, and a steep tariff increase could make their vehicles more expensive and less competitive. At the same time, American consumers may end up paying higher prices if import costs rise.

Trump has also suggested that the tariffs could be avoided if European manufacturers shift more production to the United States. His argument is that this would support domestic jobs and strengthen local manufacturing. However, such a shift is not easy and would take time, investment, and policy clarity.

The development comes at a time when global trade is already under strain due to geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. Any further escalation between the U.S. and EU could add to that uncertainty and affect broader economic stability.
