Ahmedabad is on the verge of making a historic mark in the world of sports. The city has been recommended to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a centenary edition that promises to be as symbolic as it is spectacular. If officially approved, this will be a landmark achievement not only for Gujarat but also for India’s growing ambitions on the global sporting stage. With its modern infrastructure and increasing international recognition, Ahmedabad is now poised to welcome athletes and visitors from across the Commonwealth.
The recommendation came from the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board after a thorough evaluation of multiple bids. Ahmedabad stood out due to its strong sporting infrastructure, technical preparedness, and commitment to the core values of the Commonwealth Games, sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation.
The final decision will be made during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly scheduled for November. Upon ratification, Ahmedabad will become the first Indian city to host the Games since Delhi in 2010 and will proudly stage the event’s 100th anniversary.
The successful bid is a joint effort by the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, and the Commonwealth Games Association of India, highlighting a unified national effort to bring a major international sporting event back to Indian soil.
Government leaders have welcomed the recommendation, calling it a moment of immense pride for the nation. They noted that the recognition reflects India’s rising capability to host world-class sporting events, supported by significant investments in infrastructure and athlete development.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also expressed his enthusiasm, calling it a proud moment for both India and Gujarat. He emphasized that hosting the centenary Commonwealth Games aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of world-class infrastructure and nurturing sporting talent.
If confirmed, the Games are expected to boost regional development in Gujarat, increase international tourism, and enhance India’s reputation as a global hub for major sporting events. Ahmedabad now stands just one step away from transforming a bold vision into reality by hosting a celebration of a century of Commonwealth unity and achievement.
