Apple revives ‘Slide to Unlock’ feature

New iOS update turns the classic gesture into a smarter alarm feature

Apple has brought back one of its most memorable design gestures, the “slide to unlock”,  but this time, with a new purpose. In its latest iOS 26.1 update, the feature returns as a “Slide to Stop” control on the alarm screen, requiring users to swipe instead of tap to turn off alarms.

The change addresses a common frustration among iPhone users, accidentally silencing alarms with a quick tap. The new slider ensures a deliberate action, helping users wake up on time while invoking a hint of nostalgia from the early iPhone days.

The update also refines Apple’s Liquid Glass interface, adding a toggle to increase screen opacity for better readability in bright light. Though primarily a performance-focused release, iOS 26.1 delivers smoother transitions, minor design polish, and improved system stability.

The rollout is expected this week for all compatible iPhones. Meanwhile, Apple is already preparing a more significant update, iOS 26.2, due later this year, which may introduce passport integration within Apple Wallet and end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging.

By bringing back a beloved gesture with a modern twist, Apple has once again demonstrated its knack for blending sentimentality with function, turning a simple alarm feature into a thoughtful design moment that merges memory, intent, and usability.
