Bangladesh explodes after Sharif Osman’s death

Student leader's death sparks nationwide anger and clashes with police

Bangladesh is witnessing widespread unrest and violence following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent student leader and political activist. Hadi was shot in Dhaka on December 12 while campaigning ahead of the February 2026 elections and was later moved to Singapore for treatment, where he died after six days on life support. His death triggered immediate protests across Dhaka and other major cities, quickly escalating into clashes with authorities.

Crowds of students, activists, and supporters gathered at key public spaces, including Dhaka University and Shahbagh, demanding swift justice and holding authorities responsible for failing to protect Hadi. Demonstrators also expressed anti-government and anti-India sentiments, reflecting broader political frustrations and heightened tensions ahead of the elections.

The protests turned violent as mobs vandalised and set fire to multiple buildings. In Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar area, the offices of leading newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star were attacked, trapping journalists inside before they were evacuated. Scenes of chaos, smoke, and attacks on staff circulated widely, showing the intensity of public anger.

Violence spread beyond media offices. In Rajshahi, protesters set fire to the residence of a former political leader and an Awami League office. Demonstrators also targeted the Indian diplomatic mission in Chattogram, throwing stones and chanting slogans, prompting increased security around diplomatic sites.

Following his death, arrangements have been made to repatriate Hadi’s body to Bangladesh from Singapore. Authorities are assisting the family in bringing him home so that supporters and relatives can pay their respects and conduct customary funeral rites.

The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, condemned the violence and expressed regret over the attacks on journalists. Authorities declared a national day of mourning, announced a reward for information leading to the arrest of Hadi’s attackers, and promised that those responsible would face justice. Citizens were urged to remain calm, respect the rule of law, and avoid further violence.

Security forces have been deployed across cities to contain unrest and restore order. Despite government efforts, tensions remain high as Bangladesh navigates a politically volatile period ahead of its upcoming national elections, with the nation on edge over potential escalations.
