Bangladesh has asked India to send back former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, bringing a sensitive issue to the forefront of talks between the two countries. The request was raised by Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman during his meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi.
This marks the first formal move by Bangladesh’s new government to seek Hasina’s extradition after she fled to India in 2024 following political unrest at home. Authorities in Dhaka want her to return and face legal proceedings linked to cases filed after her exit from power.
While the extradition demand stood out, both sides used the meeting to focus on improving overall ties. Relations between India and Bangladesh have faced strain in recent years, especially after the political transition in Dhaka. The latest discussions signalled an effort to rebuild trust and strengthen cooperation.
Key issues such as trade, energy supply, and security were discussed in detail. Bangladesh sought continued support from India in areas like fuel and fertiliser supply to meet domestic needs. India, in turn, indicated willingness to maintain cooperation and keep communication channels open.
Another important outcome of the talks was India’s move to ease visa processes for Bangladeshi citizens. This is expected to benefit those travelling for medical treatment, business, and education, and is seen as a step toward improving people-to-people connections.
Officials from both countries stressed the need for steady dialogue and mutual understanding to manage differences.
