Bay of Bengal on cyclone alert, Andaman gets rain

MD warns of strong winds, rough seas, and thunderstorms. Fishermen and tourists advised to stay cautious

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for the Bay of Bengal as a weather system is developing over the region. This system is likely to intensify in the coming days, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in these islands over the next few days. Nicobar is expected to receive very heavy rain in some areas, while Andaman will see heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds of 40–50 km/h may occur in one or two locations during 24–25 November.

Sea conditions are expected to be rough, with winds reaching 35–45 km/h and gusts up to 55 km/h in the Andaman Sea. The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until 23 November due to the dangerous conditions.

Residents, tourists, and boat operators are warned to be cautious. High waves may disrupt inter‑island ferry services and other marine activities. Authorities are keeping a close watch as the system could develop into a named storm in the coming days.

People in Andaman & Nicobar should stay updated with weather reports and follow local safety instructions. Low-lying areas, coastal infrastructure, and tourism operations need to be prepared for heavy rain and strong winds. The alert is a precaution to help prevent accidents and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as the system develops.
