BJP wins 7 of 12 Delhi civic bypolls

AAP secures 3, Congress and Left take one each

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by-elections were held on November 30, 2025, to fill 12 vacant wards. The seats became vacant after several councillors left to become MLAs or MPs. Counting of votes took place on December 3, and the results revealed a clear edge for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The overall voter turnout was 38.5%, much lower than the 50% recorded in the full 2022 MCD elections. Analysts say the low turnout reflects limited voter interest in bypolls compared to regular elections.

The BJP emerged as the strongest party, winning 7 of the 12 seats, thereby retaining much of its influence in Delhi’s civic body. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 3 seats, making modest gains in some areas, while Congress and the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) each managed to win one seat.

At the ward level, BJP secured key areas such as Shalimar Bagh B, Dwarka B, Vinod Nagar, Greater Kailash, Dichaon Kalan, and Chandni Chowk. AAP won Mundka, Dakshinpuri, and Naraina. Congress retained Sangam Vihar, and AIFB won Chandni Mahal. These results highlight BJP’s strong organisational presence and effective local campaigning.

The bypoll outcomes underline several trends in Delhi’s political landscape. BJP’s dominance in civic governance remains intact, while AAP continues to hold ground in selected wards. Congress and Left parties still have limited influence in Delhi civic politics. Analysts also point out that the low voter turnout suggests that citizens are less motivated to participate in bypolls compared with full elections.

Political parties are expected to study these results closely as they plan strategies for upcoming state and municipal elections in Delhi. The performance of each party in these wards could influence campaign approaches and candidate selection in future polls.
