Tensions between China and Japan continue to rise, with Beijing widening its response to recent remarks by Japan’s Prime Minister linking a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan to Japan’s security. China says the comments seriously undermine the political foundation of their ties.
Beijing has put the release of two Japanese animated films — Crayon Shin-chan: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers and Cells at Work!, on hold, in one of its latest retaliatory steps. Chinese distributors called the delay a “careful” decision, pointing to weak box-office expectations and growing negative sentiment towards Japanese entertainment following Tokyo’s comments. The move adds to China’s broader pressure campaign.
China has also suspended certain Japanese seafood imports and issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid Japan. The warning has already triggered mass flight cancellations, dealing a blow to Japan’s tourism and retail sectors.
Maritime tensions are rising too. Chinese coast guard vessels have stepped up patrols around the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, while reports of drone activity near Japanese-administered waters have heightened concerns in Tokyo.
Japan is attempting to stabilise the situation. It has advised its citizens in China to avoid crowded places and remain alert, and recently sent a senior diplomat to Beijing to push for dialogue.
Despite these efforts, China continues to criticise Japan’s stance on Taiwan and has warned against any actions that appear to support Taiwanese autonomy.
