Cochin Airport Gets Cargo Boost with Emirates SkyCargo Centre

The new centre in Cochin will enhance exports from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, also a key cargo gateway for Middle East and Europe

Kochi just got a major boost in its global connectivity game. Emirates SkyCargo, which is the freight division of Emirates airline, has officially set up an operations centre at Cochin International Airport (CIAL), opening the door for faster and more efficient cargo movement between Kerala and key destinations across the Middle East, Europe, and beyond.

The new facility was inaugurated in the presence of senior officials, including Emirates SkyCargo Manager for Kerala, Ameer Al Zarouni, and CIAL Managing Director, S. Suhas. Cargo and customs representatives also attended the event, underscoring the strategic importance of the development for Kerala’s export ecosystem.

Kochi already handles nearly 50,000 metric tonnes of international cargo annually, including perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. With Emirates SkyCargo now operating locally in Cochin Airport, exporters can expect quicker access to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, without relying on overburdened hubs like Chennai or Bengaluru.

Officials said Emirates’ entry will not only enhance cargo efficiency but also attract more international carriers to consider Kochi as a viable alternative for handling global freight. Given that airports in neighbouring cities are nearing saturation, the move could help shift significant freight activity to Kerala, offering exporters reduced transit times and improved connectivity.

Emirates and CIAL have already begun discussions on expanding the facility and launching specialised services for high-demand sectors such as e-commerce and pharma logistics.

For Kerala’s economy, the development signifies growing recognition of Kochi’s strategic location and infrastructure readiness. With global airlines strengthening their footprint, Cochin International Airport is fast emerging as a hub not just for passengers, but for businesses linking India’s west coast to the world’s busiest trade corridors.
