Cyclone Ditwah, which had stirred fears of heavy rain across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has finally lost its punch. By Sunday evening, the storm weakened into a deep depression, bringing relief to most parts of the state.
Earlier, the cyclone had drenched some coastal and delta regions. Karaikal recorded a whopping 191 mm, Nagapattinam 113 mm, and Cuddalore 96 mm between Saturday and Sunday mornings. Even Chennai, which had braced for heavy rain, received only 28 mm at two major weather stations. By Sunday afternoon, rainfall had eased considerably, with places like Mahabalipuram and Kodaikanal seeing just 14 mm, and many other towns reporting little or no rain.
Weather officials say the system will continue weakening as it drifts further offshore. For the coming days, most districts in Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, can expect light to moderate showers, with occasional thunder or lightning. Only a few areas, like Tiruvallur, might still see isolated heavier rain.
After days of uncertainty, the storm’s downgrade brings some respite, though authorities continue to monitor the system closely, especially in the coastal regions.
