Delhi-NCR air quality “severe,” GRAP III enforced

With AQI crossing 400, authorities suspend construction, limit vehicle use, and close schools to combat rising pollution

The air in Delhi and neighbouring NCR has deteriorated sharply, reaching a “Severe” category with the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 425 on November 11. In response, authorities have activated Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to curb emissions and protect public health.

Under GRAP III, all non-essential construction, demolition, and dust-generating activities have been suspended. Older petrol and diesel vehicles (BS‑III/IV) are barred from roads, though vehicles carrying essential goods and services are exempt. Schools up to Class V have been closed, while others are operating in hybrid mode.

The pollution surge is attributed to calm winds, low temperatures, vehicle emissions, and stubble burning in neighbouring states. Officials have urged residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or heart conditions, to limit outdoor activities.

Authorities say these emergency measures are necessary to reduce toxic air levels and protect public health during the winter season.
