As New York prepares for a historic change in leadership, mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is already facing strong political attacks. Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, has accused Mamdani of being “anti-Indian” and questioned the incoming mayor’s ideology and intentions.
In a television interview, Eric Trump claimed that Mamdani hates the Indian population and labelled him a radical left-wing politician. He described Mamdani as both a socialist and a communist, accusing him of extreme policy ideas, including nationalising grocery stores and taking rigid positions on international issues.
Eric Trump said such views would harm New York City and argued that Mamdani should focus on basic civic priorities like safer streets, cleaner neighbourhoods, and fairer taxes. His comments reflect a growing effort by conservative leaders to paint Mamdani as too far-left for the city.
Mamdani, 34, won the mayoral election earlier this month with strong support from young voters and progressive groups. When he takes office on January 1, he will become New York’s first Muslim mayor and the first South Asian person to hold the post, a landmark moment for the city’s immigrant communities.
Supporters of Mamdani say the criticism is politically motivated and based on misrepresentation rather than his actual policies. They argue that the incoming mayor’s focus is on making New York more inclusive and affordable, not on radical shifts as suggested by his opponents.
