A powerful explosion targeted the Jaffar Express train in Pakistan’s southwestern Sindh province on Tuesday, derailing multiple coaches and injuring several passengers. The incident occurred near Somarwah, close to Sultan Kot in Shikarpur district, while the train was en route from Quetta to Peshawar.
According to railway police officials, the explosion caused five bogies of the train to derail. The injured passengers were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Rescue teams were dispatched to the site, and police and paramilitary forces have cordoned off the area to collect evidence and determine the cause of the blast. Initial assessments indicate significant damage to the railway track.
The Jaffar Express, which operates between Quetta and Peshawar, has been targeted multiple times in recent months. In September, a blast on the track in Balochistan’s Mastung area damaged one coach and derailed six others, injuring 12 passengers. Earlier, on August 10, four people were wounded after an improvised explosive device caused six coaches of the same train to derail in Mastung.
On August 4, the pilot engine sent for clearance came under gunfire near Kolpur, an attack later claimed by the separatist Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). In June 2025, another explosion in Sindh’s Jacobabad district derailed four coaches of the Jaffar Express, though no casualties were reported. The deadliest attack occurred on March 11, when the train was hijacked, leading to the deaths of 26 people, including security personnel. Security forces later killed 33 militants and rescued 354 hostages in a counter-operation
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the recent attack on the Jaffar Express. The group has been involved in various insurgent activities in the region, including attacks on military and civilian targets. The Pakistani government has condemned these acts of violence and continues to investigate the incidents.
