Fog delays 48 flights at Bengaluru airport

Low visibility during early morning hours disrupts flight operations before conditions improve

Flight operations at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport were disrupted on Monday morning after dense fog reduced visibility, leading to delays in several services. A total of 48 flights were delayed, affecting both domestic and international passengers during peak early morning hours.

According to airport officials, poor visibility conditions were reported between around 4:14 am and 10:30 am, a time when flight movements are usually high. Of the delayed flights, 46 were domestic services, while two were international flights. The fog slowed down take-offs and landings as safety protocols required aircraft to operate with extra caution.

Kempegowda International Airport is equipped with Category III-B Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) on its runways, a technology that allows aircraft to land safely even in very low visibility. However, officials clarified that while the system supports landings, overall operations still depend on weather conditions, airline readiness, and aircraft compatibility. As a result, not all flights could maintain their original schedules.

In addition to delays, four flights operating between Bengaluru and Delhi were cancelled. These cancellations were linked to severe fog conditions in Delhi, which disrupted aircraft rotations and onward connections. Several passengers reported extended waiting times at terminals, while airlines issued updates and rescheduled departures throughout the morning.

Airport authorities stated that visibility gradually improved as the morning progressed, allowing flight operations to return to normal by late morning. Ground staff and air traffic controllers worked closely with airlines to clear the backlog and ensure safe movement of aircraft.

Passengers were advised to remain patient and stay in touch with their respective airlines for real-time updates. Airport officials also recommended that travellers check flight status before leaving for the airport, particularly during winter months when fog-related disruptions are common in Bengaluru and other major Indian cities.
