Her voice has carried the soul of Bihar to millions, and now, Maithili Thakur is ready to take that connection beyond music. The celebrated folk and classical singer is set to make her political debut in the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) likely to field her from the Alinagar seat in Darbhanga. For the 25-year-old artist, long regarded as a cultural ambassador of Mithilanchal, this marks a new chapter, one where melody meets mandate.
Renowned for her mastery of Bhojpuri and Hindi folk music, Maithili Thakur recently met senior BJP leaders Vinod Tawde and Union Minister Nityanand Rai in New Delhi ahead of the official election schedule. Tawde highlighted that Thakur and her family had migrated from Bihar during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s tenure in 1995, expressing confidence that her return would symbolize both cultural revival and renewed hope for the people of the region.
Political observers see her possible candidature as a strategic move by the BJP to connect with younger voters and strengthen its cultural roots in Mithilanchal, where she enjoys widespread popularity. Her campaign is expected to center on youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and regional development, themes that resonate strongly with her artistic legacy.
Born in Benipatti, Darbhanga, in 2000, Maithili has been a prominent face of Bihar’s cultural resurgence. Recognized by the Election Commission of India as a State Icon, she also served as brand ambassador for the Madhubani district during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2021, she was awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi for her contribution to folk music.
The Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 will be held in two phases, on November 6 and 11, with results to be announced on November 14. If nominated, Maithili Thakur could add a fresh rhythm to Bihar’s political landscape, blending artistry with public service.
