The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under Chairperson Rita Teaotia, has directed States and Union Territories to ensure food business operators (FBOs) remove the term “ORS” from product labels and brand names.
This follows a long battle by paediatrician Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh from Hyderabad against sugar-rich beverages falsely marketed as oral rehydration solutions.
The directive bans all standalone, prefix, suffix, or trademark usage to avoid consumer confusion. Non-compliance may lead to penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Earlier, such usage was allowed with disclaimers, but is now fully prohibited.
