Google is ready to give living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms a smarter upgrade with its new Gemini AI. The technology promises to make everyday interactions with Nest and Google Home devices feel natural and effortless. The announcement also introduced refreshed hardware, including new Nest Cams, a revamped Nest Doorbell, and an updated Google Home speaker.
Replacing the conventional Google Assistant, Gemini brings a new level of natural, context-aware interaction to smart home controls. Users can now give complex commands such as “Turn off all the lights except the kitchen” or ask, “What happened in the living room today?” The AI can search through video footage, generate detailed daily activity summaries, and provide smarter alerts tailored to user needs.
Complementing the AI upgrade, Google has redesigned the Google Home app, introducing three main tabs, namely, Home, Activity, and Automation, along with a new “Ask Home” feature. This allows users to engage with their devices via voice or text using natural language, making device management more intuitive.
While most functions are available for free, Google is launching a subscription called the Home Advanced Plan at $20 per month (or $200 annually) that unlocks the full capabilities of Gemini’s AI. There is also a budget-friendly $10 monthly plan offering 30-day video history and smart alerts, but without access to the deeper AI features.
The Gemini AI rollout will initially be available as an opt-in beta to owners of existing smart displays and speakers, including some older models that have been discontinued.
This significant upgrade signals Google’s intensified competition with Amazon, which is similarly integrating advanced AI into its Alexa voice assistant and Echo devices. Google is also opening Gemini to third-party device makers through a new partner program, aiming to broaden the AI’s smart home reach.
By integrating Gemini, Google seeks not just to automate homes but to transform them into more conversational, intelligent, and genuinely helpful spaces. People will experience home automation like never before.
