Harendra Singh resigns as India Women’s hockey coach

Personal reasons prompt exit. Sjoerd Marijne likely return

In a surprising development, Harendra Singh has resigned as head coach of the Indian women’s national hockey team, citing personal reasons. His departure ends a brief but eventful tenure that began in April 2024.

Harendra had taken charge with the goal of revitalising the squad. Early successes included winning the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir last November, signaling promise for the team. However, challenges soon emerged. The FIH Pro League 2024–25 saw India manage just two wins out of 16 matches, finishing last and facing relegation. This downturn continued with a defeat in the Asia Cup final, raising concerns about qualification for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Reports suggest that issues went beyond performance on the field. Some senior players reportedly struggled with Harendra’s strict coaching style, citing heavy training schedules, communication gaps, and perceived favoritism. Allegedly, these tensions even reached the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Sources indicate that a significant portion of the squad expressed discomfort with the team’s environment under his leadership.

In his resignation statement, Harendra said: “Coaching the Indian women’s hockey team has been a privilege. While personal circumstances require me to step away, my support for this remarkable team will never waver.” Hockey India acknowledged his contributions and confirmed that the search for a new head coach would begin immediately.

Hockey India are reportedly set to approach Sjoerd Marijne to return as the head coach following Harendra Singh’s exit. Marijne first took the role in 2017, briefly moved to the senior men’s team, and then returned to lead the women’s squad to the quarterfinals of the 2018 Women’s World Cup. His experience and familiarity with the team are expected to help restore stability and confidence.

As the women’s team looks ahead to upcoming international tournaments, rebuilding trust, morale, and performance will be key. Fans and players alike hope that with fresh leadership, India’s women’s hockey team can regain its momentum on the global stage.
