While marveling at the breathtaking majesty of Mount Everest’s towering slopes, nearly 1,000 trekkers and climbers thought they were safe, until a sudden, fierce blizzard transformed their adventure into a desperate fight for survival. The unforgiving storm, which struck the Tibetan side of Everest on Friday evening, unleashed a relentless barrage of snow and icy winds that buried campsites under feet of snow. Camps, positioned around 4,900 meters high, were quickly overwhelmed, tents collapsing and lives hanging in the balance.
The storm raged through Saturday, pulling trekkers into an intense struggle as they battled freezing temperatures and the threat of hypothermia. Many found themselves shoveling snow from their tents through the night, while huddling together to keep warm. The Karma valley, a remote and rugged path favored during China’s National Day holiday, turned from a place of awe-inspiring adventure into a scene of stark survival.
Local villagers and rescue teams rushed to help, braving deep snow and harsh weather to guide stranded trekkers back to safety. By Sunday, about 350 had reached the safety of the nearby town of Qudang, where they were welcomed with warmth and relief. Yet despite these efforts, hundreds remain trapped in the unforgiving mountain terrain.
While hundreds have been successfully evacuated to the town of Qudang, the race against time continues on Everest’s treacherous eastern slopes, an ominous reminder of nature’s raw power and the mountain’s unforgiving nature.
