HelpAge India Launches ‘AdvantAge60’ to Empower Senior Citizens

Campaign promotes inclusion of elders in workplaces, communities, and policymaking

October 3, observed globally as the International Day of Older Persons, is a moment to celebrate the invaluable contributions of elders and call for a society that values their continued potential. This year, HelpAge India marked this special day by launching its new campaign, ‘AdvantAge60: Powering Aspirations – Active, Enabled & Empowered’, aiming to redefine ageing and inspire active, meaningful engagement for seniors.

Held in Chennai, the event brought together dignitaries including Justice N. Kirubakaran and IPS officer V. Balakrishnan, along with academics and social welfare officials. The campaign challenges age-old stereotypes, urging workplaces, policymakers, and communities to create opportunities where age is not a barrier but a stage of renewed purpose.

HelpAge India’s 2022 report revealed that 40% of elders want to remain active and contribute to society, despite common perceptions of dependency. Rohit Prasad, CEO of HelpAge India, underlined the need to tap into elders’ vast skills and experiences for wider social benefit. Chairperson Kiran Karnik emphasised seeing elders as valuable assets who can drive innovation and nurture communities.

The event honoured senior achievers, presenting the ‘AdvantAge Achievers’ award to 87-year-old R.T. Namasivayam for his dedicated service to elder welfare.

With this campaign, HelpAge India calls for a new narrative around ageing, one of empowerment, activity, and dignity, proving that life after sixty is a time of possibility and purpose.
