Hungarian‑British author wins 2025 Booker Prize

He wins £50,000 for his spare‑prose novel of emotional detachment, marking his first debut here after earlier short‑list success

Hungarian‑British writer David Szalay has won the 2025 Booker Prize for his novel Flesh, receiving the £50,000 award at a ceremony in London.

Born in Montreal to a Hungarian father and Canadian mother, Szalay grew up in London and has authored six works of fiction. His previous novel, ‘All That Man Is’, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2016.

Flesh spans decades and settings from a Hungarian housing estate to London’s elite circles. The story follows a protagonist whose emotional detachment persists even as radical events reshape his life, with Szalay’s signature spare prose bringing the narrative to life.

The award recognises Szalay’s contribution to contemporary fiction and marks a milestone in his literary career.
