A spell of unsettled weather is expected across many parts of India this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms in several regions.
The change in weather is being caused by active western disturbances affecting northwest India. These systems are likely to bring widespread rain, lightning, and strong winds over the next few days, impacting both urban and rural areas.
Delhi-NCR witnessed a sudden shift in weather on April 5, with evening rain, thunderstorms, and even hail reported in some areas. Similar conditions may continue over the next few days, with cloudy skies and gusty winds expected at intervals.
Northern states such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are also likely to receive scattered to widespread rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are expected, and isolated hailstorms could occur, raising concerns for agriculture.
The weather activity is not limited to the north. Parts of central and eastern India are also expected to experience rain and thunderstorms, while northeastern states may see heavier rainfall in the coming days. Some southern regions, including Tamil Nadu, could also witness changes in weather conditions.
One positive impact of this system is a drop in temperatures. The rain and cloud cover are likely to bring relief from the recent heat, with daytime temperatures expected to fall closer to normal levels in many areas.
However, the IMD has warned that these conditions may also cause disruptions. Strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms could damage crops, affect transport, and lead to localised power outages. Recent weather events have already caused some damage in parts of north India, particularly to standing crops.
