India has firmly denied former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that he spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about India stopping oil imports from Russia.
The Ministry of External Affairs clarified that no phone call or conversation took place between the two leaders. “I am not aware of any conversation yesterday between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, addressing the media.
Trump had claimed during a public appearance that Modi had agreed to stop buying oil from Russia—calling it “a big step” in isolating Moscow amid the Ukraine conflict. However, Indian officials say there was no such interaction and no promise made on this front.
In its response, the Indian government reaffirmed that its energy decisions are driven by national interest and consumer needs. As one of the world’s largest importers of oil and gas, India seeks stable pricing and a diverse supply base, and will continue to act accordingly.
