As India’s most cherished sport turns 100, the nation is preparing for a celebration steeped in pride, nostalgia, and renewed purpose. On November 7, the Sports Ministry and Hockey India will jointly launch the centenary celebrations of Indian hockey at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi, exactly a century after the formation of the Indian Hockey Federation in 1925 at Gwalior.
The day will begin with an exhibition match between the Sports Minister’s XI and a Hockey India Mixed XI, featuring both men and women. The 30-minute game will highlight equality, team spirit, and the shared passion that has kept Indian hockey alive for generations. Adding to the moment, a commemorative publication titled “100 Years of Indian Hockey” will be released, tracing the sport’s journey from its golden Olympic era to its present-day resurgence.
But the festivities won’t stop in Delhi. The centenary will ripple across the country, with over 1,400 matches being played simultaneously in 550 districts, bringing together nearly 36,000 players. The initiative reflects the heartbeat of Indian hockey, its reach from grassroots villages to international arenas. Alongside the games, photo exhibitions, and digital showcases will honour the legends, landmark victories, and defining moments that shaped India’s hockey heritage.
Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said the event is not merely about history but about “renewing India’s sporting spirit and reaffirming our collective pursuit of excellence.” He reiterated India’s long-term vision of emerging as a top sporting nation by 2036, powered by investments in infrastructure, coaching, and youth development.
For countless Indians, hockey is a symbol of unity, discipline, and national pride. From Dhyan Chand’s golden years to the modern triumphs of India’s women’s and men’s teams, this centenary honours a journey of resilience and hope.
As players take to the turf on November 7, it will be a salute to a century of courage, craft, and the undying rhythm of Indian hockey.
