India has announced a $450 million aid package to help Sri Lanka recover from the widespread destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah in late November. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, visiting Colombo as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy, confirmed the package, highlighting India’s support for its neighbour in this crisis.
The package includes $350 million in concessional loans and $100 million in grants. Discussions with the Sri Lankan government are ongoing to ensure that the funds are directed toward priority needs, focusing on restoring critical infrastructure, rebuilding homes, and reviving essential services.
Key areas of support under the package include the repair and reconstruction of roads, bridges, and railways, rehabilitation of homes damaged by the cyclone, and restoration of health and education facilities. The aid will also support agriculture, helping address crop losses, and strengthen disaster preparedness across the island.
This announcement comes as part of Operation Sagar Bandhu, launched immediately after the cyclone made landfall on November 28. Under this initiative, India has already delivered over 1,100 tonnes of relief material, including tents, dry rations, water purification equipment, hygiene kits, and 14.5 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies. Indian Navy and Air Force teams, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have assisted in rescue and relief operations.
Cyclone Ditwah caused significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, worsening the economic and humanitarian challenges in Sri Lanka following its 2022 financial crisis. India’s aid reflects its Neighbourhood First policy and commitment to long-term stability and recovery in the region.
