Andhra Pradesh is making a landmark stride in clean energy with the launch of India’s first green ammonia facility at Kakinada. The $10‑billion initiative, developed by AM Green, aims to transform India into a global player in green fuel exports. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan flagged off the project, marking the start of construction on the brownfield site near Kakinada Port.
Once completed, the facility will be the world’s largest green ammonia complex, producing 1.5 million tonnes annually. Commissioning is planned in stages: 0.5 million tonnes per year by 2027, increasing to 1 million tonnes in 2028, and reaching full capacity by 2030. The project integrates renewable energy on a massive scale, including 7.5 GW of solar and wind power, 1,950 MW of electrolyser capacity for green hydrogen, and 2 GW of continuous renewable energy supported by pumped hydro storage.
The initiative is expected to generate around 8,000 jobs during construction, with long-term employment opportunities across renewable energy, logistics, port operations, and storage sectors. Beyond job creation, the facility will strengthen India’s position in the global clean fuel market. Green ammonia is emerging as a key fuel for shipping, power generation, and as a green hydrogen carrier.
AM Green has already secured supply agreements with Germany’s utility Uniper and is in talks with partners in Japan and Singapore. The project aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, positioning the state as a hub for renewable energy and green fuel exports. Officials emphasize that this development not only represents a major industrial achievement but also underscores India’s growing role in the global clean energy transition.
