Alice and Ellen Kessler, the twin sisters who captivated audiences across Europe with their singing and dancing in the 1950s and ’60s, have died together at the age of 89. The sisters peacefully ended their lives through assisted euthanasia at their home near Munich on November 17, 2025.
The twins had been planning this decision for some time, supported by the German Society for Humane Dying, which confirmed that the choice was deliberate and free from any mental health crisis. Alice and Ellen had expressed a lifelong wish to “go together,” believing life without the other would be unbearable.
Born in East Germany in 1936, the sisters trained in ballet and later moved to West Germany, where they were discovered in Paris in 1955. Their careers soared internationally, performing with legendary stars including Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, and Harry Belafonte. Even in their later years, they continued performing, their bond as strong as ever.
The sisters requested that their ashes be kept together, alongside their mother and their dog, Yello, reflecting a life defined by unbreakable companionship and shared dreams.
Alice and Ellen Kessler leave behind a legacy of artistry, courage, and devotion, a story of two lives forever intertwined in life and until death could part them together.
