In a breathtaking spectacle that feels straight out of a dream, residents of Jainagar, a small border town in Bihar’s Madhubani district, were recently treated to the rare and stunning sight of Mount Everest visible over 300 kilometers away. The snow-capped peaks of the majestic Himalayas, including the world’s tallest summit, appeared vividly on the horizon, thanks to a fortuitous combination of clear skies, recent rainfall, and significantly reduced pollution levels.
The remarkable event was captured on October 6, 2025, in a video that quickly went viral on social media, gathering millions of mesmerized viewers. The footage showcases the grandeur of the Himalayan range as seen from the plains of Bihar, with the peaks shifting through golden and copper hues as the sunrise melted into sunset. Locals and viewers online hailed the sight as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity, marveling at the pristine visibility that nature afforded.
Beyond the awe, this phenomenon hints at opportunities for promoting eco-friendly tourism in the region. Locals and observers have suggested envisioning Jainagar as an “Everest View Point,” encouraging visitors to witness the Himalayas from an unexpected vantage point far from the mountains themselves.
Experts have explained that such visibility is exceptionally rare and depends heavily on clean air, clear weather, and the absence of clouds or haze between the Terai plains and the Himalayas. Jainagar, situated along the banks of the Kamla River, originating from a glacier in Nepal, enjoys such panoramic views typically during specific seasonal windows, between Vasant Panchami and Holi, and again from Durga Puja to Kartik Purnima.
A spectacle of this kind is not new in Bihar. In fact, during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, when pollution levels plummeted nationwide, Bihar similarly witnessed glimpses of the Himalayan peaks. However, with increasing pollution levels since the 2025 sighting has reinvigorated public appreciation for clean air and natural beauty.
This rare moment united a community and sparked widespread admiration, a shared dream painted in hues of gold and silver on the horizon of Bihar’s plains.
