What began as a protest over low wages by factory workers in Noida quickly turned into violence on Monday, leaving parts of the city tense and disrupted. The unrest was mainly reported from the Phase 2 industrial area, where large groups of workers gathered to demand better pay and working conditions.
As emotions ran high, the situation spiralled out of control. Protesters began throwing stones, damaging property, and setting vehicles on fire. Several cars were vandalised, and at least one was completely burnt, sending thick smoke into the air and creating panic in the area. Police forces were rushed to the spot to control the crowd and prevent further damage.
The workers say their frustration has been building for days. A key issue is the difference in wages between Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring Haryana, where workers are paid more for similar jobs. Many protesters feel they are being treated unfairly and left behind, which pushed them to take to the streets.
The violence had a ripple effect across the city. Major roads, especially those connecting Noida to Delhi, were blocked as protesters gathered in large numbers. Areas like the Chilla Border and Sector 62 saw severe traffic jams, with commuters stuck for hours during peak time. Office-goers and daily travellers faced significant inconvenience as normal life was disrupted.
Officials said the protest had been peaceful initially but took a violent turn after clashes broke out. Authorities have since increased security in sensitive areas and are keeping a close watch to avoid further escalation.
Efforts are now being made to calm the situation. The administration has started talks with worker representatives and is looking into their demands, including higher wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions. A control room has also been set up to handle the situation more effectively.
