Philippines evacuates 1.4 million as typhoon Fung-Wong strikes

Philippines reels under back-to-back typhoons; rescue teams race against time

Super typhoon Fung-Wong swept across the Philippines, killing at least two people and forcing over 1.4 million residents to evacuate. The storm caused flash floods, landslides, and destructive winds across the country.

In Pandan, Catanduanes province, floodwaters rose to rooftops and washed away houses. One person drowned in the floods, while rescue teams saved 14 people trapped on rooftops. Another person died in Eastern Samar when her house collapsed.

The typhoon, which had winds of 185 km/h (115 mph), was downgraded to a typhoon as it crossed the main island, with gusts still reaching 275 km/h. The storm is moving north toward Taiwan, gradually weakening.

Fung-Wong hit the country just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had declared a state of emergency due to the devastation.

Authorities have opened around 6,000 evacuation centres, sheltering 92,000 families. National disaster teams continue to assess damage to homes and infrastructure.
