Piyush Goyal Confirms India, US to Seal First Phase of Trade Deal by Nov 2025

India is actively engaged in negotiations with the United States to finalize a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Wednesday. The talks aim to deepen bilateral trade relations and reduce trade barriers, marking a significant step toward strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

Addressing the progress, Goyal expressed optimism that the first tranche of the trade deal could be concluded by November 2025. While geopolitical issues have caused some delays, both sides remain committed to expediting negotiations as outlined in previous high-level discussions.

“This agreement will pave the way for greater market access and create opportunities across sectors for both India and the US,” the minister said. India is also pursuing similar trade partnerships with other countries like New Zealand, reflecting a broader strategy to diversify its global trade portfolio.

On the subject of US-imposed tariffs, particularly the 50% punitive duties levied on certain Indian exports during the Trump administration, Goyal downplayed their economic impact. He noted that only around 2% of India’s GDP is exposed to these tariffs, and ongoing domestic reforms have bolstered India’s economic resilience.

“The tariff impact on our economy is limited and manageable,” Goyal added, highlighting that India’s trade policies and reforms continue to focus on enhancing competitiveness and market diversification.

This planned FTA is part of a larger vision to expand India-US trade volumes, with a target of reaching $500 billion in bilateral commerce by 2030. As talks progress, both countries aim to finalize a multi-sectoral agreement that benefits businesses and consumers on both sides.

India’s active engagement in these trade negotiations underscores its strategic approach to strengthening global economic ties and navigating complex trade environments. The anticipated November 2025 milestone marks an important phase in this evolving partnership.
