Vladimir Putin arrives in India, strategic ties deepen

Two-day visit with PM Modi focuses on defence, energy, trade, and deeper bilateral cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi today for a two-day state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is his first official visit since 2021, signaling a renewed effort to deepen India–Russia relations amid global uncertainties.

Upon arrival, Putin was greeted with ceremonial honours, reflecting the long-standing friendship between the two nations. In the evening, he attended a private dinner at the Prime Minister’s residence, continuing the tradition of close personal ties between the leaders. He also held preparatory discussions with senior Indian officials to set the stage for tomorrow’s summit.

The main bilateral talks are scheduled for 5 December at Hyderabad House, where Modi and Putin will discuss a wide range of issues, including defence cooperation, energy imports, trade, civil nuclear projects, technology partnerships, and labour mobility. Both sides are expected to sign several agreements, including defence contracts, energy deals, and financial arrangements in rupees and roubles to facilitate trade.

Defence talks may cover S-400 missile systems, fighter jet upgrades, and the future Su-57 stealth fighter, while energy discussions will focus on Russian oil and gas supplies. The visit will also include meetings with business leaders and the launch of a local branch of Russia Today (RT) media channel.

The visit will conclude with a state banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu, underscoring the importance of the India–Russia “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.” This particular visit also reflects India’s careful balancing of strategic autonomy, energy security, and global diplomacy, reaffirming a long-standing partnership in challenging global times.
