Shaheen Afridi to Lead Pakistan in ODIs

Former captain Rizwan removed after refusing to promote betting apps. Afridi entrusted with 50-over side leadership

In a surprising move ahead of the three-match ODI series against South Africa in Faisalabad (November 4–8), Shaheen Shah Afridi has been named Pakistan’s new ODI captain, replacing Mohammad Rizwan. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed Afridi’s appointment after a key meeting in Islamabad with head coach Mike Hesson, Director of High Performance Aqib Javed, and selection committee members.

Rizwan, who led Pakistan in 20 ODIs with a 45% win record, was removed after refusing to endorse betting companies, a decision that reportedly clashed with the PCB’s commercial interests. Former captain Rashid Latif voiced criticism, suggesting ideological differences may have influenced the board’s choice.

Afridi, a seasoned fast bowler with 66 ODI caps, had previously captained Pakistan’s T20I side, though his tenure ended after a series defeat to New Zealand. This change marks Pakistan’s third ODI captaincy shuffle in just 12 months, highlighting ongoing leadership instability.

The PCB has not disclosed how long Afridi will remain in charge, but the move is seen as an effort to bring stability ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Afridi will now balance his role as the team’s strike bowler with the added responsibility of leading the side in the 50-over format.
