Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new One Day International (ODI) captain, ushering in a leadership shift in the white-ball format. Gill, who already holds the role of India’s Test captain, will now take charge of the ODI side as well, marking a fresh chapter for Indian cricket.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the change ahead of India’s upcoming ODI series in Australia, scheduled to begin October 19. Gill succeeds Rohit Sharma, who had served as full-time ODI skipper from December 2021. Under Rohit’s tenure, India registered several high points, including two Asia Cup titles and reaching the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Most recently, the side won the 2025 Champions Trophy under his leadership. These successes underscored his reputation as one of India’s most effective white-ball captains.
Rohit’s captaincy record in ODIs stood at 56 matches, with 42 wins and 12 losses, reflecting a commendable 75 percent win rate. His era was noted for consistency, ability to close out matches and leading India to strong performances in major tournaments. It was under his leadership that India consolidated its position among the top ODI teams globally.
Gill’s elevation to ODI skipper strengthens the continuity in India’s leadership structure, particularly after Rohit’s retirement from Tests earlier in the year. In his first Test series as full captain, Gill led India to a draw in England and emerged as the series’ highest run-scorer with 754 runs at an average above 75. His batting form and leadership skills in the longer format had already earned him widespread respect, making him a logical choice to steer India’s ODI ambitions.
The timing of the captaincy change is notable: India will be returning to ODI action after a fresh lull of over seven months. The Australia series is expected to be Gill’s first full assignment as ODI captain. It will be followed by home leg ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand, and a five-match T20I series in Australia. The BCCI’s decision reflects a desire to merge leadership across formats and build a unified vision for India’s future in international cricket.
Gill inherits a squad featuring senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and other emerging talents. His challenge will be to manage a transition, balance experience with youth, and maintain India’s competitive edge in ODIs. His prior success and rapport with teammates offer a promising foundation. As Gill takes the reins, the cricketing world will watch how he shapes India’s next chapter in the 50-over game.
