The world of Hindi music and cinema bid a heartfelt goodbye to Sulakshana Pandit, the golden-voiced singer and actress who passed away in Mumbai on Thursday late evening, following a cardiac arrest. She was 71. Her brother, music composer Lalit Pandit, said she breathed her last around 8 pm, and her funeral will be held today.
Born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Sulakshana came from a family where music flowed through every vein — her uncle was the legendary Pandit Jasraj, and her brothers Jatin and Lalit Pandit later created some of the most memorable tunes of the 1990s.
Sulakshana’s voice carried both innocence and emotion. Starting her career as a child singer, she soon became one of the most beloved playback voices of the 1970s and early ’80s. Songs like Tu Hi Sagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara and Saat Samandar Paar Se remain timeless, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.
Graceful and expressive, she also shone on screen in films such as Uljhan, Apnapan, Hera Pheri, Khandaan and Waqt Ki Deewar. Audiences loved her sincerity and the quiet strength she brought to every role.
In her later years, Sulakshana withdrew from the spotlight, battling ill health but always surrounded by her family’s love and music.
Her death has left a deep void in the hearts of fans and fellow artists alike. As melodies from a gentler era fill social media tributes, voices like hers never truly fade; they linger, soft and eternal.
