Six months on, Air India crash mystery persists

Relatives of victims continue to seek truth as investigations remain incomplete

It has been six months since the Air India Boeing 787 plane crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 260 people — 241 on board and 19 on the ground. Only one passenger survived with serious injuries.

Families of the victims are still waiting for clear answers about why the plane crashed. Many have hired lawyers in India and abroad, and some have filed cases to get accountability and understand what went wrong.

Relatives say that money cannot make up for their loss. They want to know exactly why the aircraft lost power and crashed. Some families have had to change life plans and face financial and emotional challenges due to the tragedy.

Investigators from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said that right after takeoff, the fuel switches for both engines were found in the “off” position, which caused the engines to lose power. The cockpit voice recorder showed one pilot asking the other why the fuel was off, and then the switches were turned on again. However, the engines could not recover, and the plane crashed. Investigators are still trying to find out whether this was due to human error or a technical fault.

Pilot groups and lawyers have criticised the early investigation, saying it has not fully examined all possible technical causes. Some families of victims also feel the preliminary report is incomplete.

The tragedy has left families struggling with emotional pain and practical difficulties. Many are calling for a full and transparent investigation to find the truth and prevent similar accidents in the future.
