Veteran Iranian actor Homayoun Ershadi, beloved for his memorable roles in world cinema, has passed away at the age of 78 after a long battle with cancer, Iranian media reported.
Born in Isfahan in 1947, Ershadi began his professional life as an architect, but his passion for storytelling eventually led him to the silver screen. He won hearts worldwide with his breakthrough role in Abbas Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry (1997), which went on to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Over the years, Ershadi graced international films such as The Kite Runner (2007), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), and A Most Wanted Man (2014), earning praise for his quiet yet powerful performances.
Iran’s House of Cinema confirmed his passing, calling him a “noble and thoughtful actor of Iranian cinema.” Fans and colleagues remember him not just for his acting, but for the gentle wisdom and humanity he brought to every role.
He leaves behind his children and a remarkable legacy, inspiring filmmakers and audiences across the globe with his art and presence.
