US President Donald Trump has publicly criticised NATO, accusing some member countries of failing to support the United States during the recent conflict with Iran. Speaking after a private meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump said the alliance “wasn’t there when we needed them” and suggested some European partners did not meet their commitments.
The president also brought up Greenland, the semi-autonomous Danish territory he has previously expressed interest in, reigniting a long-standing diplomatic tension with Denmark. “Remember Greenland,” Trump tweeted, underlining his continued fascination with the island, which Denmark has repeatedly confirmed is not for sale.
Trump’s comments come as the United States and Iran agreed to a temporary two-week ceasefire, aimed at halting hostilities and stabilising the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route. While the truce offers a brief pause in conflict, Trump emphasised that negotiations with Iran will continue behind closed doors.
Despite the sharp words, Secretary-General Rutte described the meeting as “frank,” noting that many European NATO members provided logistical support and other assistance even if they did not participate directly in combat.
