Trump launches $1 million Gold Card

Wealthy foreigners can secure US residency quickly by paying $1 million fee

US President Donald Trump has officially launched his “Gold Card” visa programme, offering wealthy foreigners a fast-track route to US permanent residency. The programme went live through a new government website, opening applications for those willing to pay the high price.

Applicants first pay a $15,000 processing fee and undergo standard background checks conducted by the Department of Homeland Security. After approval, they must make a $1 million contribution to the US government to obtain the visa. The scheme also allows US companies to sponsor foreign workers by paying $2 million per employee.

Visa holders under this programme gain the right to live and work in the United States indefinitely. They may also become eligible for US citizenship after meeting the residency requirements. Experts note that the programme effectively replaces older investment-based visa categories, focusing on substantial contributions rather than creating jobs or businesses.

Supporters argue that the initiative will attract wealthy investors and highly skilled professionals to the US, generating billions of dollars in government revenue. However, critics warn that the programme could favour the rich, creating a two-tier immigration system. Some question its legal validity, suggesting it may not have proper congressional approval, and express concern that it could be seen as “selling” residency rather than following standard immigration rules.

The launch marks a significant shift in US immigration policy. It contrasts sharply with Trump’s previous hard-line measures focused on restricting immigration and border enforcement. Observers say the programme highlights a new strategy aimed at wealth-based immigration, raising debates over fairness, legality, and the future of US visa policies.
