Trump rolls back 200+ food tariffs, India benefits

US move opens opportunities for Indian farmers and rolls back duties on Brazilian coffee, beef, and fruits

The US government has removed tariffs on over 200 food items, including tea, coffee, spices, fruits, and beef. The decision, effective from November 13, aims to ease rising food prices in the country.

For India, this is a significant opportunity. Exporters of tea, coffee, spices, nuts, and processed foods may benefit, with potential gains estimated at around US$ 2.5–3 billion. Officials say the move restores a fair trade balance, as Indian goods were previously penalized more heavily. However, some experts caution that India may see limited gains in certain products like bananas and juices, where its presence in the US market is small.

The move also affects Brazil. Tariffs on Brazilian beef, coffee, cocoa, and fruits have been rolled back, easing pressure on its exporters. While some duties still remain, the partial relief is expected to improve trade relations between the two countries.

For US consumers, the tariff cuts could help lower grocery prices, addressing concerns over food inflation. Overall, the decision is seen as a win for exporters and a step towards making food more affordable in the country.
