Trump rolls back food import tariffs

Beef, coffee, oranges and tomatoes imports get relief to help consumers

President Donald Trump has ordered the removal of tariffs on several imported items, including beef, coffee, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, cocoa, tea, fruit juices and some fertilisers. The decision is meant to reduce everyday costs for Americans who are dealing with high food prices.

Many of the products on the list are items the U.S. does not produce in large quantities, such as coffee and tropical fruits. Earlier, these goods carried tariffs of 10% to 50%, making them more expensive for consumers. With the rollback, the government hopes that supermarket prices will come down.

Not all duties have been removed. For example, tomatoes from Mexico will still have a 17% tariff. However, officials say the overall change should help lower the cost of many imported foods.

The decision comes at a time when voters across the country have been expressing frustration about rising grocery bills. Recent elections also showed that inflation and cost-of-living worries remain top concerns.

By removing these trade barriers, the administration aims to ease price pressure, improve consumer sentiment and show that it is taking steps to address household expenses.
