Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh arrived in Cairo on Saturday as India’s special representative for the Gaza Peace Summit being held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
The high-level summit, co-hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump, brings together leaders from over 20 countries to seek a sustainable path toward de-escalation and lasting peace in the Gaza Strip.
He shared a tweet upon reaching Gaza, on the social media platform X, Singh saying, “Arrived in the historic city of Cairo as the special representative of Prime Minister @narendramodi to attend the Gaza Peace Summit at Sharm El-Sheikh.”
Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited, logistical constraints and short notice led to Singh’s designation as India’s envoy, underscoring India’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in a complex diplomatic environment.
The summit comes amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, with the first phase of a U.S.-brokered peace plan underway involving hostage release, prisoner exchanges, and the opening of humanitarian corridors into Gaza.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed these developments, stating on X: “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This reflects strong leadership by PM Netanyahu. We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian aid to Gaza will bring respite and pave the way for lasting peace.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also participated, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian support and political dialogue.
While not directly involved in the conflict, India consistently advocates dialogue, de-escalation, and a two-state solution and is expected to play a constructive role in post-conflict humanitarian relief and reconstruction efforts.
