US approves $93 million arms sale to India

Deal includes Javelin missiles and Excalibur artillery rounds to boost India’s defence

The US has approved a $93 million military sale to India, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral defence ties. The deal includes 100 Javelin anti-tank missiles, 25 missile launch units, and 216 Excalibur precision-guided artillery rounds. In addition, the package covers spare parts, operator training, fire control systems, maintenance support, and technical assistance to help India integrate the systems into its armed forces.

The Javelin missile system is a man-portable, fire-and-forget weapon designed to destroy armoured targets. Its advanced targeting and guidance make it highly effective in modern combat situations. The Excalibur artillery rounds are GPS-guided and offer long-range precision, enabling highly accurate strikes while minimizing collateral damage.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) formally notified Congress of the sale, describing it as a move that will enhance India’s defensive capabilities while maintaining regional military balance. US officials said the sale will help India deter potential threats and strengthen its operational readiness.

American defence companies Lockheed Martin and RTX Corporation will supply the weapons and related equipment. These systems are expected to complement India’s ongoing military modernization efforts and improve its artillery and anti-armour capabilities.

The approval comes amid growing security concerns in the region, as India continues to focus on modernizing its military technology and improving interoperability with allied countries. Experts note that this sale also reinforces strategic ties between India and the US, reflecting a long-term partnership in defence cooperation.

The inclusion of training, technical support, and spare parts ensures that India can effectively operate and maintain the systems, maximizing their operational impact. Analysts believe the deal will further bolster India’s deterrence capabilities and strengthen its position in regional security dynamics.
