Beer Shortage in Japan as Cyberattack Halts Asahi Super Dry Production

The cyberattack has also disrupted operations at Asahi's breweries, forcing the company to shut down most of its 30 factories nationwide.

Japan is on the brink of running out of its beloved Asahi Super Dry beer following a cyberattack that has crippled production and distribution systems at Asahi Group Holdings. The attack, which began on September 29, 2025, has forced the company to halt operations at most of its 30 domestic factories, including those producing its flagship beer. Asahi has suspended ordering, shipping, and customer service functions, with no clear timeline for recovery.

Retailers across Japan are already experiencing shortages. Major convenience store chains like 7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart have reported that shipments of Asahi Super Dry, along with other Asahi products like Mitsuya Cider and Seven Premium Clear Cooler, have been suspended. Shoppers at some 7-Eleven outlets are seeing notices warning of the suspension, and other retailers are preparing to offer alternative products.

The cyberattack has also disrupted operations at Asahi’s breweries, forcing the company to shut down most of its 30 factories nationwide. The attack has disabled the company’s ordering and delivery systems, pushing Japan to the verge of running out of Super Dry, particularly at supermarkets, convenience stores, and izakaya pubs. Retailers predict beer stockouts within days and expect Asahi’s food products to follow soon.

Asahi is investigating whether ransomware was involved but confirmed no customer data leak. The cyberattack, part of a broader trend impacting Japanese firms, highlights vulnerabilities in Japan’s cyber defenses. In response to surging attacks, Japan passed a law in May 2025 to strengthen government powers against cyber threats. Asahi is cooperating with authorities to investigate the cyberattack.
