Clair Obscur dominates Game Awards 2025

French indie RPG wins nine awards, including Game of the Year

At the Game Awards 2025 in Los Angeles, the French indie role‑playing game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 emerged as the clear winner, taking home nine awards, including the top honour of Game of the Year. Developed by Sandfall Interactive and published with support from Kepler Interactive, the game led the nominations with 13 nods, converting most into wins across creative, technical, and performance categories.

Clair Obscur earned accolades for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score & Music, Best Independent Game, and Best Debut Indie Game, reflecting its strong storytelling, immersive gameplay, and distinctive artistic style. Actress Jennifer English won Best Performance for her role in the game, further highlighting the title’s compelling character work.

The sweeping success of Clair Obscur underscores the growing influence of independent studios in an industry often dominated by large franchises. Its innovative design, rich narrative, and musical composition impressed a jury of over 150 international media outlets and industry experts, solidifying its status as a standout release of the year.

Other winners at the ceremony included Battlefield 6 for Best Audio Design, Doom: The Dark Ages for Innovation in Accessibility, and No Man’s Sky as Best Ongoing Game. South of Midnight earned the Games for Impact award, while Hades II and Hollow Knight: Silksong were recognised in the action and action/adventure categories. Donkey Kong Bananza was named Best Family Game, and Mario Kart World won Best Sports/Racing Game.

The Game Awards 2025 blended award recognition with live performances and celebrity appearances, reaffirming its status as the premier annual showcase for creativity and technical excellence in gaming.
