Telangana alerts on Chrome, WhatsApp Scams

Cyber bureau of Telangana police warns users as online fraud cases rise

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a warning about two online scams, Chrome Attack and WhatsApp Ghost Pairing, that are increasingly targeting personal and financial information. In a Chrome Attack, users are tricked into clicking malicious links or visiting harmful websites, allowing hackers to exploit vulnerabilities in the Google Chrome browser and steal saved passwords, banking credentials, and other sensitive data.

The WhatsApp Ghost Pairing scam involves fraudsters taking over a user’s account by tricking victims into sharing WhatsApp verification codes through fake messages or links. Once the code is shared, attackers link their device to the victim’s account, enabling them to monitor messages, contacts, and other private information while the app continues to function normally on the user’s phone.

The TGCSB has urged users to remain vigilant and adopt strong security practices. Users should regularly check the Linked Devices section in WhatsApp and remove any unfamiliar devices, enable two-step verification, keep Chrome and all apps updated, and change passwords for email, social media, and banking accounts if there is a suspicion of compromise. They are also advised to capture screenshots of suspicious messages or pop-ups and notify banks or payment services if any financial transactions are affected.

Authorities emphasized that users should never share OTPs, PINs, CVV numbers, or WhatsApp codes and should avoid clicking on suspicious links, even if they appear to come from known contacts. Telangana Police Commissioner echoed the advisory, stressing the importance of online vigilance and proactive steps to protect personal data and financial information amid the rise in cybercrime cases.
