Nearly 40 years after its release, Malayalam classic Amma Ariyan has found a new global audience with its screening at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The restored 4K version of the film has become the only Indian feature film to premiere at this year’s festival, bringing fresh attention to one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated works.
Directed by late filmmaker John Abraham, Amma Ariyan was first released in 1986 and later gained cult status for its unique storytelling and powerful themes. The film follows a journey through Kerala while touching on politics, social issues and personal memories, making it one of the most respected films in Malayalam cinema.
Its return to Cannes is especially significant because the film has been revived through a detailed restoration process. Since the original film negative was lost over the years, restoration experts worked with the surviving damaged prints to recreate the movie in 4K quality and preserve it for future generations.
The screening at Cannes received a warm response from audiences, with many praising the effort to bring the film back to life. Members associated with the film and restoration project attended the event, celebrating a moment that highlighted India’s rich cinematic history.
